Online Communities in Video Games

I read about the Xbox Live Community on the NYtimes.com. The article talks about how Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are all trying to create online communities for consumers to get involved in. What is being talked about a lot more are the changes that are going to be made to the Xbox Live Community. Microsoft is pushing for a higher level of user experience where users create gamertags, avatars, and profiles. They can then make friends and chat online, send text messages, and voice messages. I have used Xbox Live for years just to play video games online with my friends, I do not use any of the other community features but Microsoft is pushing for a more in depth online community for its users. It is not something that I would be personally interested in but the advancements in creating online communities in the video game world are improving and trying to become parallel with the web.
