But for those of you who don't know: Chat-roulette is a site that uses the web-cam on your computer to connect you with random strangers from all over the world to have a video-chat. After using it myself I'm almost 100% sure that 80% of the people you get connected to are old men masturbating to their camera.
Omegle is something like that, but you can't see anything, because its a text-chat. You get connected to strangers from all over the world have a random text conversation with. Sometimes you get connected to some genuine people to talk to, other times you get connected with people just looking to have internet chat sex.
New York Times-
“The first person I connected with said, ‘let’s have cyber right now,’ ” he said of his experience on Omegle, referring to cybersex. “The second was a 14-year-old kid from London. It’s not hard to see how this is going to be a problem.”
As you can see, online communities like these can be extreme hazards to anyone using them. That 14-year-old kid from London will most likely connected to a random person asking to "cyber." If this isn't wrong, then I don't know what is. The internet houses all things horrible and great, and literally anyone can get ahold of anything they want to- as long as they know the right way to do it. I'm just afraid that due to communities like this, todays electronically based youth will be scarred forever. I mean most 12-year-olds basically live on facebook already, and whose to say they don't use these other sites just as much as facebook?- Or how often they get connected with creepy masturbating strangers on these sites?- Or actually attempting to meet said people in real life?- Which brings up the topic of ACTUALLY meeting people from the internet, but thats a whole different topic in it's own right...
EDIT: Video-chat exists on Omegle now.
